Dear Friends, Supporters, and Members of the Public,

We are reaching out at a time of crisis for Sai Kung Stray Friends Shelter. The Planning Department has ruled that a portion of the land currently occupied by our shelter must be vacated, with compliance required by 12 September 2026.

This decision comes despite our ongoing efforts to regularise the site. We have submitted a planning application for the disputed area, as well as for the remainder of the shelter, but the application may take another two to three months to be processed. Until then, the order remains in force.

Unless a solution is found urgently, 70 healthy, loving, beautiful dogs could lose the only home and safety they have known. These dogs have done nothing wrong. Many came to us after abandonment, neglect, or hardship. At the shelter, they have found care, security, companionship, and a chance to be loved.

We have asked for more time while the planning application is considered, but our request has not yet resulted in a postponement. We are working through every possible channel to find suitable temporary or permanent accommodation, but immediate shelter options are extremely limited.

We urgently need your help.

1. Support our planning application

Within the coming week, we will share the planning application number, relevant details, and guidance for writing letters of support to the Planning Department. Individual letters from members of the public are especially important. Your voice can help show that these dogs matter, that the shelter serves a real community need, and that a humane solution must be found while the application is being considered.

2. Adopt or foster a dog

If you have ever thought about welcoming a dog into your home, this is the moment to act. We urgently need adopters and long-term foster homes. Every dog placed in a safe, loving home creates precious space and gives that animal security during this uncertain period.

All dogs at the shelter are:
Neutered – Vaccinated – Microchipped – Provided with preventative care – Fully supported by veterinary care

Message Narelle on WhatsApp at 9199 2340 to arrange a visit to our shelter and meet the dogs. Please share our attached adoption and foster notice as widely as possible—with family, friends, colleagues, schools, residential groups, and community networks.

3. Donate to help us survive this crisis

The financial cost of complying with the order, adapting the facilities that are not disputed, relocating dogs where necessary, and continuing daily care will cause severe financial hardship. While the final cost cannot yet be confirmed, we expect it to be substantial.

Any donation—large or small—will make a meaningful difference. Your support will help provide safe accommodation, food, veterinary care, transport, temporary boarding, and the practical work needed to protect these dogs.

 

We are profoundly grateful for the kindness of our donors, volunteers, and supporters.

Because of you, these dogs have been cared for with as much love, dignity, and commitment as humanly possible.

Now they need us more than ever.

These 70 dogs are facing the consequences of circumstances completely beyond their control. They cannot speak for themselves, find a new home on their own, or understand why their safety is at risk. But together, we can stand up for them.
